SEFEX Presurized Treadle Pump is a foot operated two cylinder pump and uses Treadles to engage both the operator's legs and full body weight. It can be used to lift water from bore wells, canals, ponds, streams etc. and it is designed to irrigate small area of crops. Water can be delivered overhead Tank upto 16 Mtrs height from ground level. The whole body and other metal parts of the pumps are hot dip galvanized, to minimize the effect of rusting on the metal parts as these parts are always in contact with water. It makes this pump more durable. 


The pump is human powered to eliminate the fuel and oil costs associated with motorized pumps and reduces the crop damage and income losses associated with mechanical breakdowns and interruption of the fuel supply. The treadle pump is simple and efficient. If the pump is properly adjusted and maintained, the pump can be operated several hours a day without tiring the operator. The leg muscles, which are the most powerful part of human body, provide the power to drive the pump. Moreover, the pump is operated in a natural way, as walking. 


The treadle pump can raise water by suction and by pressure, just like a motorized centrifugal pump. It can also pump water through a distribution pipe. The pump can be used by one adult only. The total vertical distance that water can be pumped is limited by the total weight of the pump operator. One adult weighing 50 Kg. can pump water up to 8m to 16m vertically.

Essentially the pump has following parts

  • Pump body having two parallel cylinder and valve box, duly hot dipped galvanized.
  • Two-piston assembly fitted with Cam & Chain arrangement, duly hot dipped galvanized Fig A
  • Two-piston assebly duly galvanized with CI Pulley & Steel rope arrangement Fig B.
  • Two mild steel Treadles rectangular hollow pipes, duly hot dipped galvanized
  • Rubber Valves & Cups (Buckets) v) T-Handle having hollowed pipe, duly hot dipped galvanized. 



The cylinders of the Treadle pump are made from mild steel 2mm sheet, which are rolled around and subsequently arc welded, while the Mandrel remains inside the cylinder. This method produces cylinders, perfectly round & smother. The first part of the pump body is the valve plate, which is the top of the valve box to which the Cylinders are welded. The cylinders are placed at the centre on the valve box. This is done to provide room inside the cylinders for seating of the Inlet/Outlet valves. The whole body and other metal parts are hot dip galvanized to minimize the effect of rusting on the metal parts as these parts are always in contact with water. 



The pistons of the Treadle pump consist of two Rubber cups, which are held together by a z clamp at the end of the piston rod. A steel washer is placed between the two Rubber cups. The upper cup faces towards the top of the cylinder. It seals the Piston when the pump is acting on the suction stroke, while the Piston is moving upward. The lower cup faces towards the bottom of the cylinder, it seals the piston when the pump is acting on the Pressure stroke, while the piston is moving downward. Since the Rubber cups are flexible, they expand against the Cylinder as a result of atmospheric pressure (for the upper cup), and the pressure of the water inside the cylinder (for the lower cup), thereby sealing the piston.



Four rubber valves are used in the Treadle pump, (one Inlet and one Outlet valve in each cylinder) all the valves are simple Check valves which open/close in response to the water pressure acting upon them. The Outlet valve opens away from the cylinder and lets water out of the cylinder when the piston is moving down ward. The Inlet valve opens in to the cylinder and lets water in to the cylinder when the piston moves upward. The two Inlet valves draw water from the Inlet chamber of the valve box that connects it with the Intake pipe. The two Outlet valves discharge water into the outlet chamber, connected to the outlet pipe of the pump.



Treadles are made of rectangle hollow pipe, with broad chequered plates, duly hot dipped galvanized to provide firm grip to user's foot.



A cam system has been introduced for up and down motion of Treadles. Cam is fabricated of mild steel plate/pipe with Plastic bush for free and friction less movement of Treadles. Chains are used to link treadles with pistons. Axle shaft made up of Mild Steel round is used with Plastic Bush for free movement of Cam & Chain arrangement.



A pulley & steel rope system has been introduced for Up and down motion of Treadles. Pulley is made up of Cast Iron round for free and friction less movement of Treadles. Steel rope is used to link Piston. Treadles & Pulley fitted on Axle shaft of the fixed block.



T-Handle is made up of mild steel hollow pipe Round/Square duly of dipped galvanized.



At several occasion, users find problems of "priming" in Treadle pumps during start up which consume great deal of their energy. This problem can be eliminated by using a foot valve at the bottom of Suction Hose.


Operation Features :

  • The Treadle pump follows the basic lifting principle of the hand pump. It consists of two barrels, pistons and treadles and is operated by one person, who manipulates his/her body weight on the Treadles.
  • The discharge of water ranges between 1400 - 1600 liters Fig. A. and more than 1600 liters Fig. B. per hour.

The Discharge Head

The Sefex drive and discharge head is made from high grade cast iron and it is mounted at the top of the borehole or well. The head carries all the column pipes which are linked through the head to its horizontal discharge outlet. Inside the discharge head a generous area is provided to allow easy flow of water - this also helps to reduce friction losses to a minimum. 


The head shaft passes through the whole depth of the head and is connected to the line shafting which transmits the rotary drive to the impellers. Lubrication of the bearings in the discharge head is effected by periodical injection of grease or circulation of oil. The stuffing box is conveniently located in the head and is easily accessible for servicing. 


Adjustments to the impeller are made by means of a regulating nut on top of the head. A non reversible type pulley is fitted dowels block any reversal motion as soon as the pump stops rotation a clockwise direction. 


The construction of the head allows various alternative drives to be used directly coupled, flat or V-belt, and right angle gear type using flexible shaft or pulley

The Column Stage

Each stage includes :

One part with two forged and machined flanges welded on each end. The pipe is of standard length (2.5 m or 3m according to customers Requirement)

A top quality stainless steel transmission shaft, ground and polished and tested for perfect straightness so that it ensures minimum vibration and longer bearing life.


The shafts are connected by couplings. A spider bearing assembly provided with a special water lubricated rubber center bearing is bolted between the pipe flanges at intervals (2.5 m or 3 m according to the column length) to ensure accurate concentricity and alignment of the line shaft. These bearings are primed by means of the funnel mounted on the discharge head. Priming is only necessary when the pump has been standing idle.

The bowl assembly

This section, the HEART of the pump, is of the multi-cellular type and is always submerged below water level. Of a very practical design, it is especially suitable for narrow wells and boreholes. 


The helico-centricugal type impellers are made of high grade cast iron and balanced. They are built up on an extra strong stainless steel shaft and securely locked in position by a double cone tightening systems. 


A water lubricated rubber bearing is fitted into each of the bowls between the impellers - these bearings also act as stabiliser guides for the shaft.


The curve of the bowl diffusers is designer to allow water to flow freely through the bowl stages without turbulence - this reduces friction loss to a minimum and gives the maximum output.
